BMW E30: How To Remove the Instrument Cluster

Wether it’s because your SI batteries have drained, your backlight is fried or you just want to fit those fancy chrome dials, sooner or later you’ll end up having to take out the instrument cluster. Here’s how you do it

Removal

  1. Remove the lower dash panel by turning the three plastic screws 90 degrees and sliding it out of the two clips on the firewall and steering axle.
  2. Undo the two “thumbscrews” on the back side of the small plastic panel below the cluster and remove the panel.
  3. Undo the now exposed 4 screws on the lower part of the instrument panel.
  4. Undo the two tiny screws holding the top of the plastic shroud in and remove the plastic shroud.
  5. Undo the two tiny screws holding the top of the cluster in.
  6. Gently pull the cluster forward and remove the two (or three, if you have an OBC) multipin connectors by first prying up the little black clip on top with a small screwdriver.
  7. Wrestle the cluster out.

Installation

As usual, installation is the reverse of removal. Do remember to install the panel mentioned in point 1 back in to the 2 clips, otherwise you end up with you feet stuck between the panel and any of the pedals at some point in time!
