Essential Amiga Software
As the AmigaOS 3.x is basically 10 years old, there’s quite some room for improvement. Ofcourse Haage & Partner released OS 3.9 some time ago, which includes a lot of useful new stuff, but still, there’s room for improvement. Here’s a writeup on the stuff that I like, note that all applies to OS 3.x on “classic” m68k hardware, as I don’t have any other Amiga system running for now.

Replacing an iMac G3 harddrive
I’ve never minded much about the noise my various computers generated, but recently, listening to the whine of my PC’s harddrive, something just “snapped” inside my head, and I declared war on noise - I just couldn’t stand it anymore.Guess everyone has it’s limits when it comes to this, and well, I guess after 15 years I reached mine.
The PC was quickly quitened down that same day by replacing the old Maxtor bootdisk with a Seagate Barracuda and a new CPU fan, but then another sound started bugging me: the old Quantum Fireball SE HD from my Girlfriend’s iMac DV made an ‘unbearable’ bearing noise when idle and loud knocking sounds when grinding. It also was too slow and too small, and okay, I just needed to finally rip open that iMac to poke around inside

Digging up the roots: My (T)Rusty Amiga
From something like 1990 on, I’ve been an avid Amiga user (or believer, fanatic, activist, etc.). For years, the Amiga and the people and activities (largely demoscene-related around it were consuming a major part of my free time. Those were some great times, until it all went south with Commodore screwing up et al, “we” were on the cutting edge of technology, doing things before and/or better than any other computer could do, and we were not afraid to show that off too
. And even after these ‘high times’ I still enjoyed using Amiga’s, just because they did a lot of jobs so efficient and elegant. But after we moved house, and thus our collection of Amigas in 2000, I’ve never bothered to hook up my trusty ol’ A4000 again (remarkable, since I still used it regularly back then - guess I was just tired of it all somehow)… that is, until last week.
After listening to some old mods I suddenly caught the buzz again and just had to hook up my A4000 again, so I started digging in the attic…
